Columbia's Famously Hot Initiative Recognized with Prestigious Award at SC Governor's Conference on Tourism & Travel

Members from the brand team accepted the award on Tuesday
at the awards luncheon during the conference.
(L to R) Back: Bill Ellen, Lora Prill, Chad Prosser, John Durst, Libby Gober, Miriam Atria;
Front: Douglas OFlaherty, Mandi Engram, Kelly Barbrey, Ric Luber, Tommy Stringfellow

Columbia’s “Famously Hot” marketing initiative was recognized with the prestigious Governor’s Cup award as the state’s top travel and tourism honors were presented at the 45th annual S.C. Governor’s Conference on Tourism & Travel.

The Governor’s Cup is awarded each year to honor a tourism partner whose event or organization has had a significant impact on the economy and quality of life for its community as well as the entire state. It is considered the top tourism award in the state.

"This is much more than a win for a brand and marketing campaign—it is a win for our region," said Ric Luber, President and CEO of the Midlands Authority for Conventions Sports & Tourism. The Authority, whose mission it is to market and sell the Columbia area to leisure and business travelers and meeting planners, led the effort to develop a destination brand in 2008.

“This honor would not be possible without the participation and support of all of our partners who worked so hard to develop and promote the brand and campaign,” Luber said. “We’re proud of our partners. We’re proud of our community, and we’re excited for the future of Famously Hot Columbia.”

The branding and advertising campaign is entering its third year, having generated more than a million unique visitors to the Authority’s web sites and over 750,000 video views on YouTube, along with more than 15,000 fans on Facebook and 8,500 followers on Twitter. In addition, more than 50 businesses and organizations have incorporated the new brand into their marketing campaigns and communications.

To develop the campaign, the Authority partnered with industry and community leaders, individuals who market the area and ADCO, a local strategic, creative and interactive agency to work through a brand identity process. “Famously Hot” rose to the surface as being unique, differentiating and attention grabbing, after the team of more than 40 individuals defined the essence of the Columbia area as The New Southern Hot Spot.

Tourism is a $1 billion industry for the Columbia region and supports 12,000 area jobs that provide services, products and amenities for visitors, saving tax paying households an estimated $675 a year due to the economic impact of tourism in the state.

The awards luncheon included remarks from Roger Dow, president of the U.S. Travel Association and director Chad Prosser of the S.C. Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism.

This year’s Governor’s Conference was held at the Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes. A range of experts in the tourism business presented during the three-day gathering, and which also included the debut of the state’s new “South Carolina: Made for Vacation” marketing brand.

About the Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism:
The Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports & Tourism is a private, not-for-profit corporation funded primarily by revenue generated by visitors through accommodations taxes and is the parent organization of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, and the Columbia Regional Sports Council. The mission of the Midlands Authority is to strengthen the area’s economy by marketing and selling Columbia, its accommodations, restaurants, facilities and attractions as a destination for meetings, conventions, tradeshows, special events and leisure travel. For more information, please visit columbiacvb.com.

Here's video from the awards luncheon -- sorry it's a little shaky -- I was trying to take pictures and video at the same time!

Meet Riverbanks Zoo's Newest Addition, Baby Oliver the Koala

Koala Knockabout Has a New Addition
Riverbanks Zoo Introduces New Joey

On your next trip to Riverbanks make sure you stop by Koala Knockabout – you might catch a glimpse of Oliver, the Zoo’s newest resident, a joey (or baby koala).

While koalas have a teddy bear-like appearance, they are not a bear at all. Koalas are marsupials, similar to kangaroos; the females have a pouch where they carry their young during development.

Oliver was born in late April 2009 to parents Lottie and Jimmy. The newborn spent nearly seven months developing in his mother’s pouch before the keepers even caught a peek at him.

“The keepers observed movement in Lottie’s pouch in July, but it wasn’t until late October that they got the first look at Oliver’s face,” said John Davis, curator of mammals at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

When a koala is born it is about the size of a jellybean. It travels through the birth canal to the pouch where it nurses for several months without making a public appearance. As a joey grows, it may stick an arm, leg or even its head out of the pouch for short periods of time before it feels confident enough to come completely out of the pouch.

Now, too large for Lottie’s pouch, Oliver spends most of his day perched on mom’s back or tucked around her stomach.

Lottie, Oliver’s mother, came to Riverbanks from Australia in 2003, as a result of a sister-state relationship formed between South Carolina and Queensland, Australia. Jimmy, Oliver’s father, came to Riverbanks in December of 2008 from the Los Angeles Zoo.

Oliver will remain at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden for the next several months while he continues to grow, clinging to the back of his mother. Once he reaches about 12 months, he will be considered mature and weaned from his mother. Ultimately, Oliver will be transferred to another zoo based on breeding recommendations from the Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Oliver is the first offspring for Jimmy and the third for Lottie.

It is the mission of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden to foster appreciation and concern for all living things. Riverbanks is located at 500 Wildlife Parkway, Columbia, SC 29210. The Botanical Garden entrance is located at 1300 Botanical Parkway, West Columbia, SC 29169. The park is open daily from 9am to 5pm, except for Thanksgiving and Christmas day. Admission is $9.75 for adults, $7.25 for children ages 3 – 12 and free for children 2 and under. Group rates and other discounts may apply. Celebrate 2010 with Free Fridays at the Zoo through February

Start the New Year with a FREE visit to the Zoo. Riverbanks’ Free Fridays program kicked off last Friday, January 1, and continues through February 26. Each Friday during the months of January and February residents of Richland and Lexington counties will receive free admission to Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

“The Free Fridays program is a way for Riverbanks to show our appreciation for the continued support by the residents of Richland and Lexington counties,” said Satch Krantz, executive director of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

Riverbanks is a special purpose district and receives funding each year from the taxpayers of Richland and Lexington counties. To qualify for free admission, Richland and Lexington county residents will be asked to show proof of residency with a valid ID or a copy of their property tax statement. All other visitors will be charged regular admission. There is no limit to the number of Fridays Richland and Lexington county residents can visit during the promotion – they can come one Friday or all nine.

Riverbanks’ winter hours are 9am to 5pm daily. January and February make for a great time to visit the Zoo because many of the animals are most active during the cooler winter months. There are also several indoor exhibits where guests can step in from the cold. These exhibits include the Birdhouse at Riverbanks, Aquarium Reptile Complex, Gorilla Base Camp and Koala Knockabout.

Winter Fest Comes to the State Museum

Parents wondering what to do with the kids when school is out for the winter holidays need look no further than Winter Fest, the South Carolina State Museum’s annual holiday tradition.

Now in its third year, Winter Fest, a two-week long celebration of the winter season, kicks off Saturday, Dec. 19, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., and runs until Sunday, Jan. 3. “On Dec. 19 at noon, our guests will enjoy musical selections from Tchaikovsky’s immortal ‘Nutcracker Suite’ played by the Lake Murray Chamber Orchestra,” said State Museum Director of Programs and Education Meika Samuel. “Plus, we’ll have seasonal crafts and Winter Star Lab portable planetarium shows for exploring the winter sky.”

Also dropping by on Dec. 19 will be Santa, the “right jolly old elf” himself, who will make the first of four appearances at Winter Fest that day. He’ll be back to spread holiday cheer on Dec. 21, 22 and 23.

Winter Fest continues Sunday, Dec. 20 with a special holiday concert by gospel singers Levitical Praise at 3 p.m.

Other highlights of Winter Fest include “Shortest Day, Longest Night,” a day of programs on the winter solstice, Monday, Dec. 21, said Samuel. The day’s activities include winter solstice crafts, winter Star Labs and a musical performance by Generation of Darlington High School.

On Tuesday, Dec. 22, museum guests will learn more about winter holidays around the world with multicultural displays and performances.

Wednesday, Dec. 23, children and their parents can celebrate the winter school break with Dinosaur Day at the State Museum. Families can enjoy dinosaur crafts and two showings of the popular hit movie “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs,” at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Additional showings of “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs” can be seen on Saturday, Dec. 26 and Thursday, Dec. 31.

“Also during Winter Fest, amateur photographers whose Christmas wish is to learn how to take photos like a professional can learn the basic rules that accomplished photographers follow to produce beautiful photos,” Samuel said. “Five star Canon master photographer Manuel Gaetan will lead a photo seminar Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 1:30 p.m.”

The Museum will present winter Star Lab programs all during Winter Fest. These 30- minute portable planetarium shows ($3 per person) focus on seasons, constellations and moon phases. Star Labs will be presented Dec. 19, 21-23, 26, 28-31, and Jan. 1-2.

In addition, local potter Paul Moore will give pottery-making demonstrations on a treadle potter’s wheel on Wednesday, Dec. 23, Wednesday, Dec. 30 and Thursday,

Dec. 31.

“Seasonal crafts and special holiday movies will be offered every day from

Dec. 19 through Jan. 3,” said Samuel. “Plus, we’ll offer a selection of short seasonal films every day at 2 p.m. with a marathon of four movies on Wednesday, Dec. 30. It’s a sleigh full of activities that we hope people will want to return to several times.”

Unless otherwise noted, events are free with membership or admission. Winter Fest continues through Sunday, Jan. 3. For more information and a full schedule of events, call (803) 898-4952 or visit www.southcarolinastatemuseum.org.

Celebrate the season at the sixth annual Harborside Lights

With thousands of lights being strung, 1200 luminaries ready to be set and dozens of trees being decorated, Lake Carolina is ready to celebrate the upcoming holiday season at Harborside Lights on Friday, December 4 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Planned activities for the Harborside Lights celebration include photos with Santa, stocking decorating, hay rides, musical entertainment and horse drawn carriage rides. Festive holiday lights and other special decorations for Harborside Lights have already begun appearing throughout the community and are lighting up the spirits of residents and visitors alike.

"Every day, I see new decorations go up in the community and it looks just beautiful," said Andrea Recor, a new resident of the Harborside neighborhood and Lake Carolina’s internet sales ambassador. "I can’t wait to see how it all comes together when everything is lit for the first time after Thanksgiving!"

Also arriving after Thanksgiving are the fresh cut Fraser Fir trees from Plumtree, N.C. The trees will be on sale in Lake Carolina’s Town Center starting Fri., Nov. 27 and also will be sold during Harborside Lights. A variety of specialty craft vendors and food vendors will be on hand at Harborside Lights as well for the holiday goers looking to get some of their gift shopping done.

Lake Carolina’s own merchants will be hosting holiday open houses in Town Center and on the Village Green during the holiday celebration. Their stores will be decorated and ready to welcome visitors with a tasty, little treat and some family-fun activities.

"I can already feel the excitement growing around Town Center," said Shannon Peery, owner of HALO Salon in Lake Carolina’s Town Center. "After seeing the lights for the first time last year, seeing how everyone from the landscaping team to the merchants come together to make this holiday celebration wonderful just amazes me!"

Peery, who began decorating her shop before mid-November, said that seeing the thousands of twinkling lights and witnessing the holiday spirit she described as "infectious" greatly influenced her decision to move to Lake Carolina.

Pumpkin Smash at Riverbanks Zoo | Saturday, November 7, 2009

Animals to Experience Pumpkins in All Shapes and Sizes

What:
Halloween might be over, but the animals at Riverbanks will participate in their own pumpkin party this Saturday, November 7, at the annual Pumpkin Smash enrichment encounter. Come watch the animals as they spot, sniff, chase and tackle their own tasty pumpkin treats.

The pumpkins will be delivered in all shapes and sizes. They will be frozen, diced, and even carved and stuffed with special treats. While some animals will smash the pumpkins, others will carry them around, hide them or eat them (maybe even whole)!

Enrichment is the process of providing stimulating surroundings for zoo animals. These settings allow the animals to demonstrate species-typical behavior, let them exercise control, provide them with choices and enhance their well-being.

Public enrichment encounters allow Riverbanks to educate guests about the importance of animal enrichment. They also provide great opportunities to watch animals interact with unusual items in their environment…something you might not see on a typical visit to the Zoo.

Guests will have the opportunity to get a temporary tattoo and create a seasonal craft. The tattoo station will be set up in the Aquarium Reptile Complex.

Evolution: 21st Century Songbook presents the next Great American Songbook at the Columbia Museum of Art

The Columbia Museum of Art hosts Evolution: 21st Century Songbook with Columbia musical theater veterans Kevin Bush and Tom Beard for a special performance of song standards for the 21st century in the galleries of the exhibition, Ansel Adams: Masterworks, at the Columbia Museum of Art on Tuesday, November 17 from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m. The exhibition, Ansel Adams: Masterworks and Museum galleries will be open at 6:00 p.m. Concert is limited to 80 seats. Tickets are $10 or $8 for members and can be purchased, in advance, online at columbiamuseum.org.

"It is a real privilege and honor to bring the art of song to the Columbia Museum of Art. It's particularly a treat to perform amongst the exhibition, Ansel Adams: Masterworks. We have a profound respect for the great artists whose songs we are interpreting, and being surrounded by the work of Ansel Adams will make that appreciation resonate even more deeply," Kevin Bush said.

Joined by bass player Terry Trentham and percussionist Charles Williams, Evolution: 21st Century Songbook brings a fresh voice to traditional cabaret through intimate interpretations of songs by writers like Jimi Hendrix, Suzanne Vega, Leonard Cohen, Stevie Wonder, Rickie Lee Jones and others - songs destined to become a vital part of the next Great American Songbook.

Spend a “Spooky Sleepover” Night at the State Museum

Sleepovers are always fun, but kids ages 5 to 12 and their parents will get a special thrill spending the night at the South Carolina State Museum at its “Spooky Sleepover” Friday, Oct. 23 to Saturday morning, Oct. 24.

Beginning with the 6:30 check-in, family fun thrills will begin as campers enjoy snacks. At 7 p.m., the museum will show the fun film “Night at the Museum II: Battle of the Smithsonian,” starring Ben Stiller. Next up is a special treat being presented for the first time: campers will go on a “mystery” scavenger hunt, in which a new artifact has been stolen and must be recovered.

“The hunt will cover three of the museum’s floors and will be conducted by flashlight to add to the fun,” said Volunteer Manager Jennifer Lee. “At some of the stops, characters from our exhibits will ‘come alive’ to help hunters with the clues to their searches.”

Exhibit characters, or “residents,” will include a paleontologist, an astronomer, a paleo Indian, a Revolutionary War soldier and more, said Lee.

Prizes will be awarded to all those solving the mystery.

“Not only that,” said Lee, “but we’ll also have a special appearance by the museum’s resident ghost, Bubba.”

As an added option, “Boo Bags” packed with ghoulish delights will be available for purchase.

Cost of the evening, which includes snacks both Friday night and Saturday morning, is $25 per child, $20 per adult. Cost for State Museum members is $20 per child, $15 per adult.

Families may register through Oct. 19 by calling (803) 898-4999 or e-mailing campin@scmuseum.org. More information can be found on the museum’s Web site, www.southcarolinastatemuseum.org.

Riverbanks Annual Halloween Spook-tacular Serves up a Surprisingly Cool Treat

Boo at the Zoo Returns for Seventh Season

Riverbanks Annual Halloween Spook-tacular Serves up a Treat

[Columbia, SC] – Celebrate Halloween Riverbanks style at Boo at the Zoo. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden’s annual Halloween spook-tacular will kick off its seventh year on Friday, October 16, running nightly October 16 – 18 and October 23 – 30.

“Boo at the Zoo is a safe and fun way for families with children to experience Halloween,” said Tommy Stringfellow, director of marketing at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden.

During the 11 wild nights, Riverbanks will hand out at least 200,000 pieces of candy to costumed princesses and superheroes as they stop at the 16 stations along Trick-or-Treat Trail. But, there is more to Boo at the Zoo than just candy. Boo-goers will rock the night away at the Mummy’s Eeky-Freaky DJ Dance Party, frolic in a sea of suds at Frankenstein’s Foam Zone and watch in wonder as magician Ray Hardee performs his Moonlight Magic.

If that is not enough, kids can take a spin on the Spooky Spots and Stripes Railroad, help Captain Scaab find his missing treasure while watching the 3-D thriller Curse of Skull Rock or meander through the A-maze-ing Pirate Adventure. Guests can finish their evening by roasting marshmallows at the bonfire and participating in the nightly costume parade.

“In an effort to create a more positive experience and safer environment for our guests, all tickets to Boo at the Zoo must be purchased in advance,” said Stringfellow.

Boo at the Zoo will run from 6pm to 9pm on each of the scheduled evenings. Tickets for Boo at the Zoo are $6 for Riverbanks members and $8 for the general public. No tickets to Boo at the Zoo will be sold the nights of the event.

Boo tickets can be purchased online at www.riverbanks.org or at any Riverbanks ticket booth from 9am to 5pm. If these options do not work for you, please call 803.779.8717 x1100 and the receptionist will happily assist.

In the spirit of Halloween, costumes are encouraged, but because this event is geared toward families with young children, Riverbanks asks adults not to wear masks or costumes that cover their faces.

For more information, call Riverbanks at 803.779.8717 or visit www.riverbanks.org.

Riverbanks ZOOfari: A Toast to the Coast

Don’t Miss the Wildest Fundraiser in Town!

Experience the wild side of the Zoo on Saturday, October 3, at Riverbanks ZOOfari, the Zoo’s annual fundraising event. Beginning at 7pm, guests can take an evening stroll through the Zoo, catch a glimpse of some wild creatures, savor coastal cuisine and bid on one-of-a-kind silent and live auction items.

The event’s theme, A Toast to the Coast, will be tied into four areas of the park, with each dedicated to a different region. The Palmetto Plaza will represent the Low Country by channeling all things Carolina, including beach music performed by the Fabulous Kays. Things are bound to heat up at Safari Camp where guests will experience a Mexican flair one might find on the Baja peninsula. Add a little Cajun flavor and the laid back, island-style of the Florida Keys, and you will be right at home in the Gulf Coast of Riverbanks, also known as Carousel Plaza. Lastly, the scenic Pacific Northwest will be brought to life on the Zoo’s Saluda River Bridge.

Each area will feature delectable coastal cuisine and a signature specialty cocktail. To help support Riverbanks’ conservation-focused mission all seafood dishes will be created using only sustainable seafood options. Of course, seafood is not the only thing on the menu. The chef at Riverbanks has planned a mouth-watering menu for palates of all types.

The highlight of the event is always the live auction. Guests have the opportunity to bid on rare and unusual auction items that can’t be found anywhere else in town. Items on the auction block this year include a behind-the-scenes African safari at Riverbanks coupled with an African-themed dinner party overlooking the elephants, an after-hours birthday party for your child with an up-close and personal penguin encounter, a five-course dinner and wine tasting in the Botanical Garden and much, much more. If the fast-paced live auction isn’t your speed, there will be plenty of enticing options to place bids on at the silent auction, too.

Tickets for Riverbanks ZOOfari are on sale now and available at www.riverbanks.org. Regular admission tickets are $85 and tickets for Riverbanks members are $75.

Riverbanks ZOOfari is a fundraiser hosted by Riverbanks Society, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports the needs of Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. All proceeds from the event help care for the animals that call Riverbanks home. A portion of the ticket price is tax-deductible
